Wiedenroth and Gilloux win Race 1 in Monaco-Alpes Maritimes Round

The Département 06 hosts another exciting World Cup event

Col de Turini, France – Saturday 5 October 2024 – Under the sun and with the occasional cloud, the WES UCI E-MTB XC World Cup made its debut at Col de Turini for the Monaco Alpes-Maritimes Round Presented by Magneti Marelli Checkstar, in collaboration with the Monegasque Cycling Federation.

With a fresh venue ahead, the action started with the Qualirace to define the grid. World Cup leader Anna Spielmann (Haibike) posted the fastest time among the Women, while newcomer Adrián Cuellar (Artesana Bafang Factory) began his WES journey spectacularly by clocking the Men’s best time.

Once all the riders were in their starting positions and the countdown hit zero, the race launched with intensity. But just a few meters in, Jan Miró’s (Artesana Bafang Factory) chain snapped, forcing him to DNF.

Following this, Joris Ryf (Specialized) and Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized) took the lead, into the first corner ahead of the rest of the pack and securing the Santero Holeshot.

The German Reigning World Champion never relinquished her lead throughout the race. She managed her energy wisely and handled the track, claiming her third consecutive World Cup victory.

Spielmann wasn’t 100% fit but she tried to match Wiedenroth’s pace and despite suffering some technical issues, the Austrian managed to finish in second place. French Solene Bouissou (Team Oise Organisation) completed the podium in third.

Hard Fight

Although Ryf initially captured the Holeshot, he fell back to fourth place. Ahead of him, Jérôme Gilloux (Lapierre Overvolt) took the race’s control, closely followed by Mirko Tabacchi (Leynicese RDR Italia Factory Team) and Cuellar.

The trio held this formation until lap four, when Tabacchi overtook the Frenchman, taking the lead and holding it until the final lap. Just as victory seemed certain for the Italian, Gilloux fought back, finishing first, while the Italian took second, and the Swiss rider placed third.

What’s next?

Sunday will bring the season finale with the last shot, the eighth race of 2024, where the final standings will be decided. The awards will be presented later in the evening at the WES Ceremony at the Port of Ventimiglia, part of the Monaco Principality Ports.
