Monaco (P.ty) Wednesday 22 September 2021 – WES is back racing after the Summer break and it flies to Spain for its debut in the Sea Otter Europe Festival for Round 4.
The worldwide known event is hosting this year 154 exhibitors, 195 brands, coming from 15 different countries. Free admittance for visitors and the chance to test new products and experience amateur riding will grant some good race spectators figures after a long wait.
WES races will be the icing on the cake of an exciting sporting programme, being the E-MTB World Cup the guest star of the weekend and the event opener on Friday.
For this round, the traditional 2-race schedule will see the Qualirace and Race of Day 1 taking place on Friday, and the Qualirace and Race 2 on Saturday. For the first time in the season, races will be held on the same racetrack, counterclockwise on Friday and clockwise on Saturday.
After witnessing the 2021 UCI E-MTB World Championship last month, WES is glad to welcome back its Men’s Standings Leader, Frenchman Jérôme Gilloux (Moustache), racing in his brand-new Rainbow Jersey for the first time.
Galvanised by clinching this title, Gilloux will keep fighting on the Girona track against his season rival, the Swiss Joris Ryf (Bergstrom) as 10 points only separate the leader from the runner up with up to 50 points available next weekend. The Girona Round results will play a key role in the last battle to take place in three weeks time, the Big Finale one-shot race. Having scored two podiums in a row and following a convincing performance at the Worlds, n. 3 in the overall standings, Théo Charmes (Cube) from France will do his best to get some glory at the Costa Brava-Girona Round and secure his place in the top-3. The round ambassador, Spanish-based Honduran rider Milton Ramos (Rockrider) gets to Girona in 8th place and will clearly push hard in front of the home crowd.
This event will welcome both Carlos and David Checa, two motorsports living legends, World Superbike Champion and MotoGP former racer, and four times Endurance World Champion, respectively. The local brothers with deep passion for all offroad sports will challenge themselves on the UCI E-MTB World Cup track for the first time.
Anything can happen in the Women’s field, normally offering more unpredictable results at WES. The Sea Otter Round sees an open battle in the standings with 2020 World Champ Mélanie Pugin (BH) leading by 31 points over the recently crowned Swiss E-MTB Champ Nathalie Schneitter (Trek). 3 points only separate the Olympian from the German Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized) in third place, who unfortunately suffered another injury last week and will not line up at the Girona start. WES will welcome Danish Olympian Malene Degn (Orbea) and Sandra Santanyes Murillo (Trek) from Spain who will make their debut in the series.
