Bielstein (Germany), Saturday 2 September 2023 – The fifth Round of the WES UCI E-MTB XC World Cup Presented by Schwalbe took place in Bielstein, and it was filled with rain-soaked thrills and muddy spills, marking the series’ debut in Germany.
WES Germany Round Race 1 Start
In preparation for the event, the rain was a constant companion, turning the Bielsteiner Waldkurs trails into a slippery and more demanding track. Riders were geared up and ready to tackle the terrain as they braved the elements.
The action kicked off on Saturday with the Qualirace, which set the stage for Justine Tonso and Jérôme Gilloux (Lapierre Overvolt) as the dominant force, securing the Raspini Pole Position.

As the Quali concluded, it was time for the main race. Gilloux and Tonso, focused and determined, took the first corner in the lead to take the Fassi Holeshot.

From that point onward, Women’s Reigning French Champion seized the lead, extending her advantage with each passing lap. She left no room for German Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized), who was eager to make her mark on home soil.
“I had a very good start today, better than I’m used to have. I was feeling good and had a very tough battle with Sofia (Wiedenroth) from the very first lap, so the battle was tough. I managed to handle a very technical uphill section well, creating a great gap. I’m very happy to win here”, said Tonso.

Meanwhile, Antonia Daubermann (Advanced E-Racing), also from Germany, claimed the third spot of the podium in front of her home crowd.
Race 1 Women’s Podium
Now, on the same challenging track and race, Jérôme Gilloux executed a similar strategy to his teammate. He burst out of the gate, took the lead, and maintained his position throughout the gruelling 7 laps of the race.
“It was very difficult because it rained a lot until last night, and then the weather conditions changed, which impacted the overall track and mud conditions. So, this demanding track required adapting your riding approach and style to the different sections of it. It wasn’t a very technical circuit for me, but I really love these conditions. So, I’m happy to win here in the very first race in Germany”, said “The Specialist”.

This win served as a return for Gilloux, who had faced disappointment in Spa without victories. Right behind him was Joris Ryf (Specialized). French Théo Charmes (Team AOTL) was third, despite facing technical issues with his chain and a mud-covered motor during the final lap.
Race 1 Men’s Podium
The Bielstein leg of the WES UCI E-MTB XC World Cup proved to be challenging, but Germany Round isn’t over yet, as tomorrow the riders move on to Race 2.
