WES is delighted to announce Round 3 will take place in Bologna, Italy, 6-8 September 2019.
Following the success of the first two WES Rounds, the Series is excited to have the opportunity of hosting an event in the well-known, bustling Italian town. The venue will allow WES to install large e-Village and Paddock areas, meaning excellent visibility and a spectator-friendly setup.
Bologna’s status as a city of great historical and cultural importance brings tourists from across the world. Due to the massive annual influx of sightseers, students and visitors, sustainable mobility has become a focus for the city. This fits perfectly with the WES mission to improve and promote sustainable mobility in towns and cities around the world.
All in all, Bologna is one of the best venues for an event that WES could have hoped for. It was an easy decision to make a change of venue from the originally planned Italian Round venue.
The e-Village will be located in the Giardini Margherita, a beautiful park in downtown Bologna that is the oldest, largest and most popular public garden in the city. As well as displaying the latest e-bike technology, the e-Village will also give visitors the opportunity to try out the newest bikes and two-wheeled e-mobility vehicles on a designated test track.
For this first WES event on Italian soil, the XC Paddock will also be located in the Giardini Margherita, enabling a great public presence. The Enduro Paddock will be located in the Bologna Apennine area, the highest mountain peaks adjacent to Bologna with excellent trails for Enduro racing.
Marco Fontana, of Focus Scuderia Fontana, who will be competing in WES XC in Bologna, is looking forward to the event:
“The excitement is growing, and I just can’t wait to see what Italy will provide in its hosting of WES Round 3. Cities are key in order to promote our sport and, luckily, we have hills around Bologna, so we can stay there and ride the nearby trails. I’m sure it will be fantastic. I hope to see more riders at the start line because the joy of riding WES is huge!”
WES Italian Promoter MSM, Media & Sport Management Ltd, said:
“We are excited to organise a sporting event that combines competition with many key aspects of sustainable mobility, such as new technologies and the respect of the environment. For us, it is therefore a great motivation to contribute to this development with our event management know-how, together with WES and the local institutions.”
WES will have a strong presence in Bologna during the event, beginning with Friday’s media event that will introduce athletes, teams and indeed the sport in the city’s downtown area. Public attendance and participation events will continue throughout the weekend, with the usual WES e-Village activities, exhibitors in place, Saturday’s DJ set and Sunday’s Ride WES taking beginners and experts alike around the nearby mountain bike trails.
The event schedule will look slightly different to previous WES Rounds, with the XC and Enduro on different days for the first time.
Friday 6 September
XC free practice and race, Bologna City
Saturday 7 September
Enduro free practice and race, Bologna Apennine
All eyes will be on the Italian teams and riders, not least the Scott Mr Wolf E-Bike Racing Team, who are at the forefront of WES Enduro rankings as we head to Bologna. Jessica Bormolini leads the Enduro Women’s standings, with Nicola Casadei sitting second in Enduro Men.
